Costly errors in the first inning by Riverview Gabriel Richard’s defense put them in an early 3-0 hole they couldn’t climb out of. Liggett eventually added one more run and stifled the Pioneers’ offense for a 4-2 win in a Division 3, Region 22 softball semifinal at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
Liggett’s three first-inning runs came with one out as Anna Majewski and Maddison Hamilton both reached on errors.
Emma St. John and Allison Stapleton then combined to drive in the three runs for Liggett.
In the top of the third, Richard added a run when Mary Pizzo scored on a Jessica Baginski hit to make it 3-1. The Pioneers scored again in the top of the fifth when Camryn Lozon drove in Pizzo with an RBI single to slice the lead to 3-2.
But in the bottom of the inning, Liggett’s Emily Miserendino singled, stole second and when the Pioneers couldn’t convert a double play she scooted home gave the Knights a 4-2 lead.
Richard threatened in the top of the sixth, but a base running error took them out of the inning.
For the day, Pioneers pitcher Bella McLaury threw six innings and allowed only one earned run. Along the way, the Wayne State University-commit struck out five, walked two batters and gave up four hits.
At the plate, Lozon and Baginski were both 1-for-3 with one RBI each, while Pizzo was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and Sandy Cislo was 1-for-3.
Richard finished its season with a 21-16-1 record and its second district championship in three seasons.
