Divine Child and Riverview Gabriel Richard opened the Catholic League AA Division tennis season on Tuesday at Park Colony in Allen Park. Both teams came out swinging well and quickly lived up to high expectations for the season.
The visiting Falcons scored an impressive 5-3 win over the Pioneers, who were missing No. 1 singles player Will Gajda who was out with the flu.
“It was some great competitive tennis with two strong teams,” said Richard Coach Kristy Cameron. “It was a very close match with two three-set matches (three singles, one doubles).”
Divine Child’s David Metaxas had a strong showing at the top of the lineup, beating Nathan Vasquez 6-0, 6-0 at one singles.
Jacob Hanoian answered for the Pioneers in a great match at two singles. The Richard senior defeated Nick Metaxas 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
The Falcons took the next two singles matches. Cade McLogan defeated Yuri Alonte 7-5, 6-2 at three and Joe Mulligan defeated Drew Adams 6-4, 6-2 at four.
Divine Child’s No. 1 doubles team of John Balash and Nick Bustamante defeated Shawn Szpaichler and Jon Donahey 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Richard’s No. 2 doubles team Michael Mocerri and Dylan Reynolds defeated Jack Sydorchuk and Chad Wnuk 7-5, 6-1.
The Pioneers’ No. 3 doubles team of Brenden Wlodkowski and Chance Desana defeated Josh Stanek and Jacob Balash 6-0, 6-3.
The Falcons’ No. 4 doubles team of Charlie Reynolds and Joey Wisniewski defeated Trevor Rank and Andy Kozoil 6-4, 6-2.
