After kicking off league play last week, rivals Allen Park Cabrini and Riverview Gabriel Richard went head to head on Tuesday night in a CHSL AA match.
In what was a battle between two talented teams, the Monarchs overcame a defeat in the opening set and knocked off the host Pioneers 3-sets-to-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 25-13).
With the victory, Cabrini improved to 2-0 in the division, while Richard fell to 0-2.
Katelyn Pinkowski had a big night for the Monarchs, with 23 kills, two aces and three blocks. Cabrini teammate Arden Fuchs had 11 kills, one ace and three blocks and Allison Wilk had 42 assists, three kills, one ace and one block.
For Richard, Sydney Kusiak had 25 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while Nina Biundo finished with 13 kills, 11 digs and one ace and Bella Kandes contributed ace and 20 digs.
Early on, the first set remained close the entire way and down the stretch the squads were tied at 22, 23 and 24. With both sides then needing two points for a win, Richard stepped up and took the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Monarchs were up 17-9 in the second set, but the Pioneers charged back with 10 consecutive points and suddenly led by two. However, it was a rally that Richard couldn’t sustain and Cabrini answered with eight of the next 10 points, including six of the last seven, and evened things up at 1-1.
Late in the third set, Richard was two points away from a victory, as it had a 23-21 lead. Instead, the Monarchs stunned the home team with four quick points and claimed the set victory to go up 2-1.
Cabrini kept that momentum rolling into the fourth set and dominated the hosts by 12 points to ultimately wrap up the night.
The Monarchs were scheduled to host Madison Heights Bishop Foley on Thursday night and the Pioneers were set to welcome in Dearborn Divine Child the same evening.
