Boys Basketball beats Everest Collegiate 66-45

On Tuesday, Gabriel Richard would welcome CHSL rival Everest Collegiate. The Mountaineers where heading into the contest tied in first place, with Richard, at 4-0 in the league. Everest was coming off a win versus Detroit Cristo Rey 45-36.
In the first, the Pioneers exploded offensively knocking down several perimeter shots. Senior, Yuri Alonte nailed two (2) three pointers in the quarter and scoring 8 points while Junior, Eric Wigginton scored 4 points. Richard’s defense was outstanding in the quarter. In fact, the defense held Everest to just 2 points when Junior, JC James hit a buzzer beating three pointer to make it 16-5.
“We played as good as you can defensively.” Head Coach, Kris Daiek said. “We had a great week of preparation. I thought our kids where pretty focused for this game.” Coach Daiek added.
In the second, Everest still had no answer for the Pioneers offense. GR would knock down three 3 pointers in the quarter on their way to a 21 points. Senior, Tim Augustyniak and Junior, Eric Wigginton would score 7 a piece in the quarter and Sophomore, Garrett Balazsi would score 5 points to give GR the lead at halftime 37-18. Senior, Anthony Brown would orchestrate the offense dishing out 5 assists in the quarter and pulling down 4 rebounds in the quarter.
“He makes everyone around him better.” Coach Daiek said of his Senior, Anthony Brown. “He was outstanding tonight.” Daiek said.
In the third, Everest would claw their way back into the game behind the standout JC James. The Junior, would knock down 6 points on their way to a 13-10 edge in the quarter. GR’s Brown would knock down a big three pointer to stop the Mountaineers run and maintain a 16 point lead going into the fourth.
“We knew Everest was going to respond.” Daiek said. “That program has a ton of pride and those kids play hard for 32 minutes.” Coach added.
In the fourth, Gabriel Richard would look to Tahj McGee for offense. The junior would score 7 points in the quarter and Richard would get a great offensive balance from 5 others. Seniors, Jac Lemieux and Tim Augustyniak would add 3 points a piece and Balazsi, Wigginton and Kyle Racho (JR) would score 2 points a piece.
“We where happy with the performance tonight.” Coach Daiek said. “Our kids prepared hard for the game and I think they performed well tonight.” Daiek said.
The Pioneers move to 10-0 and (5-0) in the league and ranked #9 (Class C) in the associated press poll.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the press and your peers. However, our goal wasn’t to be ranked in the state. We are trying to focus on some other things. We have to keep working hard and stay focused.” Coach Daiek said.
Wigginton and Augustyniak finished with 14 a piece and Wigginton hauled down 13 rebounds. Junior, Tahj McGee finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Balazsi finished with 9 and Alonte 8. Anthony Brown finished with 3 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds and 4 steals.
Gabriel Richard Catholic will face Detroit Cristo Rey on Friday night at home. Game time is 7:30pm.
