After beating Cristo Rey twice during the regular season, Riverview Gabriel Richard welcomed the same squad in for the first round of Class C, Region 72 action on Monday night.
The Pioneers jumped out to a big lead, but the Wolves charged back and kept things close the rest of the way.
In the end, however, Richard held on for a 60-55 victory and advanced to face Detroit Universal Academy on Wednesday, back on its home court.
Anthony Brown and Yuri Alonte both scored 14 points for the Pioneers, while Tim Augustyniak had 11 and Taj McGee finished with 10.
With about 1:30 left in the contest, Alonte passed to McGee under the basket for an easy two points.
Soon after, Alonte went end to end and added two more points to give Richard a 58-51 lead and some breathing room.
Despite a strong effort from Cristo Rey inside the final minute, Richard held on for the five-point victory.
In the final quarter, Brown and Alonte combined for 10 points.
Early on, the Pioneers were up 21-9 after the first quarter, but led only 37-29 at the half.
The Wolves were able to tie the game during the third quarter and trailed by only two points heading into the fourth.
Sam Stewart scored 18 points for Cristo Rey and teammate Zion Stone finished with 17 points, 13 of which came in the second quarter.
Richard’s second-round battle with Universal Academy is set for 6 p.m. The following semifinal game at the school will feature Ecorse and Melvindale ABT.
