Gabriel Richard played at Father Gabriel Richard on Thursday, September 5th. The home team was favored to win this division opener as FGR is returning 8 top players from their best season in school history.
The Pioneers got off to a slow start, conceding an early goal half way through the first. Despite the goal, Senior Keeper Andrew Dykowski had an outstanding first half saving 7 shots in the first half of play. The run of play was all FGR until the last minute of play when sophomore Ivan Hernandez found, junior forward Andrew Szczechowski who assisted the goal scorer Gabe Parks with 5 seconds left in the half. It was left footed strike from just outside the 18′ into the bottom left corner. Bringing the game to 1-1 at halftime.
The second half was a constant battle from both sides, both teams having chances. FGR definitely had more possession but the 1-1 lock was broken by Andrew Szczechowski with 10 minitues left in the game. A beautiful ball from Ivan Hernandez from the left side of the field found Stasiu Tavasckiewick on the back post who headed it back across goal for the assist as junior, Szczechowski only needed a flick on the ball to put Gabriel Richard up 2-1 with 10 minutes left to go.
FGR then increased the pressure but solid performance from everyone helped secure the win. Dominating performances from Noah Wigginton and Steven Augustyniak in the back line helped improve the pioneers to a 4-0 start conceding only 1 goal in their last 4 games, whilst scoring 21 goals in that span. The Pioneers gear up to take on divisional rival Cabrini, Thursday August 7th.
