The Gabriel Richard Catholic Boys Basketball team welcomed in Trenton High School. The Pioneers are coming off a 21 point win over Frankel Academy and securing the Sectional Championship. The Trojans are coming off a 9 point loss to Taylor High School. Trenton would welcome back 6-5 Senior Zach Conti who had been sidelined for the past 8 games with a knee injury.
In the first, the Pioneers dominated on both ends of the floor. On the offensive end would drop in 21 points with 4 three-pointers. Senior, Kevin Tuttle would hit 2 in the quarter while Senior, Kyle Alonte and Junior Jacob Kowal would both drop triples. On the defensive front, Richard would hold the Trojans to just 8 points. The Pioneers would create 6 turnovers leading to more opportunities and GR capitalized.
“We shot the ball really well in the first half.” Head Coach, Kris Daiek said. “I think that is the best we have shot the ball all year.”
In the second, the Trojans found some offensive spark from their big Senior, Zach Conti. Conti would score four points in the quarter. However, GR would explode on the offensive end. The hot shooting continued. The Pioneers would rattle off 26 points in second. Senior, Garrett Balazsi would score 8 points Tuttle dropped in 4 points. Sophomore, Mike Holdsclaw would add 4 points. Richard would outscore Trenton 26-13 in the quarter and lead 47-21.
“We have the luxury of playing a lot of guys.” Coach Daiek said. “This team is extremely deep and tonight we were clicking offensively.” Daiek added.
In the third, GR’s defense bottled up the Trojan offense, holding them to just 6 points. Sophomore, Mike Holdsclaw and Senior, Deshon Elam would both score 5 points in the quarter. Junior, Robbie Henderson would add 4 points and Tuttle would hit a triple. Richard would take a commanding 67-27 point lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Freshman Mike Calhoun would score three points and Sophomore, Drew Daiek would drop in three points. Senior, Nevin Hughes scored 2 points which pleased the Pioneer fan base. Hughes, recently committed to Central Michigan. Richard would go on to win 76-31.
Kevin Tuttle would lead all scorers with 13 points and 6 rebounds, Garrett Balazsi scored 12 points. Mike Holdsclaw would drop in 11 points. Deshon Elam dropped in 9 points. Kyle Alonte and Robbie Henderson had 7 points apiece. The Trojans were led by Zach Conti and Micah Ottenbrect both had 8 points.
“It was one of those nights where everything seemed to fall.” Coach Daiek said. “It didn’t matter who was in there we just seemed to make everything.” Coach Daiek said.
The Pioneers move to 12-2 on the season and will welcome in Cardinal Mooney on Monday night. This will be the last game before the CHSL playoffs begin next Saturday.
