In what was another big season for Downriver-area volleyball, Gabriel Richard Catholic was ranked among the top teams in the state in Division 3.

Richard won the annual News-Herald Invitational and reached the CHSL C-D championship game. To advance to the CHSL finals, the Pioneers knocked off Allen Park Cabrini in the semis. In the title match, they were defeated by Wixom St. Catherine.

In the postseason, Richard advanced to the D3, District 86 championship game. It was there that they were knocked off by eventual-state-semifinalist Monroe SMCC.


Sydney Kusiak, Richard: Kusiak picked up second-team all-state honors in what was her senior year. The powerful outside hitter wrapped up 2018 with 548 kills, with an average of 5.3 per set. She also had 45 aces, 73 blocks and 335 digs. In addition, she was the MaxPreps National Player of the Week for Michigan for the week of Sept. 24.


Isabella Kandes, Richard: Kandes earned an all-state honorable mention after a big junior year with Richard. The libero wrapped up the season with 781 digs, 55 aces, 58 kills and 45 assists. She also had a serving percentage of 91.4 percent.


Olivia Pellegrini, Richard: Pellegrini shined for a Richard team that was ranked among the top D3 teams in the state in 2018. The senior outside hitter finished with 231 kills, with a kill percentage of 44.6, and she had 35 aces, 241 digs and 18 blocks. She picked up all-region honors for the season.


Sharmaye Becraft, Richard: Becraft was yet another player who excelled for Richard during its big season of 2018. The senior middle blocker and all-league honoree finished with 166 kills, 17 assists, 103 digs and 67 blocks. She had a kill percentage of 49.8 and she served at 91.1 percent.


Alexa Cosgrove, Richard: Cosgrove played a major role in Richard’s success in 2018. The senior setter finished with 556 assists, 38 aces and 188 digs. The all-league honoree also served at 92.8 percent.


Also named Honorable Mention was Madelyn Szczechowski and Samantha Hurtado.
