Pioneers News · Boys Basketball Remains Undefeated with 55-53 Win!!!

Gabriel Richard Catholic welcomed in Franklin High School from Livonia on Friday after winning their last three games. Franklin was coming in at 2-1 while Richard hasn’t experienced a loss on the season.

“We have really played well on both ends of the floor. Our kids have executed extremely well so far this season.” Ninth year head coach, Kris Daiek said.

In the first it was clear that Franklin found their groove early outscoring the Pioneers 15-13. It was Greg Fox who would lead the scoring with 6 points while four others would find the scoring column for Franklin.

Richard would answer with Senior, Robbie Henderson answering with 7 points and Junior, Mike Holdsclaw with 4 points. Junior, Drew Daiek would drop in 2 points to keep the game close.

“They were much bigger and physical than us…early.” Coach Daiek said. “It was disappointing in our effort and intensity early. However, they (Franklin) are a very good basketball team

In the second quarter, It was Livonia finding the groove offensively while Richard seemed to struggle. Although, the Patriots would only outscore the Pioneers by a point, It was obvious Richard had no answer for Franklin’s offense.

“We seemed to be on our heals all night against these guys (Franklin) They were very comfortable offensively .” Coach Daiek admitted. “We had to change what we where doing and we adjusted.”

In the third, Richard seemed to make adjustments on both ends of the floor. Senior, Braden Bilinski would provide the offensive spark dropping in 5 points while Sophomore, Mike Calhoun and Junior, Mike Holdsclaw would add 4 points a piece as the Pioneers would outscore Franklin 15-11 and take a 1 point lead heading into the final quarter.

Senior, Braden Bilinski

“We ended that quarter on a run.” Daiek said. ” Bilinski, Calhoun and Holdsclaw sparked us there in the third.”

In the fourth, the Pioneers and Patriots would battle back and fourth. However, It would be Richard that would hit key shots down the stretch and get key stops on the defensive end to stifle the Franklin attack. The Patriots found an answer and took a 5 point lead with just over 3 minutes to play. Holdsclaw and Kowal would answer with a 8 point run giving GR a late lead.

“We adjusted the defense in the third quarter that got them (Franklin) out of their comfort zone…disrupted their flow on the offensive end.” Coach Daiek said.

Senior, Jacod Kowal would hit two (2) key three pointers while Holdsclaw would drop in 5-6 from the freethrow line. Hiuser, Calhoun and Szczechowski would add to the scoring as the Pioneers would take control and win over a very good Patriots team, 56-53.

“We found a way to win.” Coach Daiek said. “We ended up outscoring them 10-2 in the last few minutes. I was proud of our defense down the stretch as well as out freethrow shooting.” Coach Daiek added. “Our kids took it to another level and decided tonight wasn’t going to be the night we lose our first game.”

Junior, Mike Holdsclaw score a career high 18 points and hauled down 8 rebounds. The Junior also dished out 4 assists, three in the second half.
