Pioneers News · Boys Basketball Tops Ann Arbor Greenhills 50-32!!

After losing a tough game to Flint Powers on Tuesday Night, Gabriel Richard Catholic would open conference play against Ann Arbor Greenhills on Friday night. Greenhills would come in with a 2-1 record while Richard would enter the contest 5-1.

“We told our players that the season starts today.” Head Coach, Kris Daiek said. “We knew this team would come in with great intensity and we would have to play great in order to win…conference play is a different ball game.” Coach Daiek added.

In the first, Richard would come out on fire on both ends of the floor. Senior, Robbie Henderson would score 11 points in the quarter, outscoring the opponent by 2 points by himself. The Pioneers would open up the quarter on a 14-0 run. However, Greenhills would answer with three 3 pointers cutting the lead to just 8 after the first quarter. Senior, Owen Kline would drop in 6 of the Gryphons.

“I thought we played very hard in the first quarter.” Coach Daiek said. “They hit some big shots in the quarter to give them some confidence.”

In the second, Richard and Greenhills would trade baskets. Sophomore, Mike Calhoun would score 4 points in the quarter while Henderson and Senior, Hans Fredrick would add 2 points a piece. The Gryphons would outscore GR by 2 points and stay within striking distance, 25-19.

“They (Greenhills) did a very good job of keeping their composure and knocking down some shots.” Coach Daiek said. “We were pressing a little bit offensively.” Coach Daiek added.

In the third, both teams traded baskets…again. The Pioneers could not seem to pull away from the tough Greenhills team. However, late in the third Richard would go on a 8-2 run to extend the lead to 10 points behind a three pointer by Senior, Jacob Kowal and 5 points from Calhoun.

“We sometimes can get anxious on offense…we try to score 10 points each possession. I thought we did a good job of slowing things down and wining in the half court.” Coach Daiek added.

In the fourth, Richard’s defense would step it up. The defense would create several turnover that created several scoring opportunities for GR. Guard, Nick Szczechowski would get a steal and hit a key basket and a foul in the middle of the quarter. The Sophomore would hit the freethrow while two possessions later Senior, Braden Bilinski would hit a three pointer to extend the lead to 16 points. Michael Calhoun would provide more power down low scoring 4 points in the quarter.

Richard would go on to win 50-32. Senior, Robbie Henderson led all scorers with 18 points. Sophomore, Mike Calhoun scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds. For Greenhills it was Owen Klien with 12 points while Finn Klien added 8 points. The Pioneers would improve to 6-1 (1-0 CHSL Intersectional) on the year and Greenhills would fall to 2-2 (0-1 CHSL Intersectional).

“We stepped up on both ends of the floor. I thought the defense at the end was the difference.” Coach Daiek added. “Our defense definitely sparked the offense.” Coach Daiek added.

Richard will travel to Cranbrook on Tuesday night in an early conference battle. Cranbrook is coming off a 13 point win and holds a 6-1 record.

“It’s gonna be tough. They are the favorites in the conference…big school, big team. We are going to have to play our best to have a chance at beating these guys in their gym.” Coach Daiek added.
