The Gabriel Richard Catholic Boys Basketball Team welcomed in Cranbrook for a CHSL Intersectional Conference contest. The Pioneers would enter the game with a 11-1 record and 6-0 in the conference. The Cranes entered the game with a 9-3 record and a 4-2 record in the conference. In their last meeting GR would come away with a 69-53 win at Cranbrook.
In the first, the Pioneers would start off hot offensively. Senior, Robbie Henderson would score 10 points in the quarter while Sophomore, Mike Calhoun would score 5 points. Senior, Jacob Kowal would drain one (1) three pointer to give GR a 20-13 lead. Senior, Max Hauxwell would score 6 points for Cranbrook. Richard would carry a 20-13 lead heading into the second.
“We shot the ball well in the first.” Said Head Coach, Kris Daiek. “We did a good job on the offensive end of the floor.” Daiek added.
In the second, Richard would continue to have the hot hand. Senior, Jacob Kowal would score 12 points in the quarter while Calhoun would add 4 more points. The Pioneer defense would hold Cranbrook to just 8 points in the quarter. GR extended their lead to 17 points at the half.
“We played a very good first half of basketball.” Coach Daiek said. “We got some good minutes from everyone.” Coach Daiek added.
In the third, GR and Cranbrook would match each other basket for basket. Sophomore, Nick Szczechowski would score 3 points while Senior, Matt Maki would drop in 3 points. Senior, Jack Fairman would score 6 points to lead Cranbrook. Richard would carry a 48-31 point lead.
“We have been getting scoring from several different players on the season. I thought tonight we continued to get scoring from other players.” Coach Daiek said.
In the fourth, the Pioneers were paced by Sophomore, Mike Calhoun. The center provided 4 points and Sophomore, Nick Szczechowski would score 3 points to maintain the 17 point lead. Richard would extend the lead to 22 with just under 4 minutes to play.
Gabriel Richard would come away with the 59-40 victory. Seniors, Robbie Henderson and Jacob Kowal would score 15 points a piece and Sophomore, Mike Calhoun would score 15 points and grab 11 rebounds. Nick Szczechowski would score 6 points and grab 8 rebounds and dish out 8 assists. Senior, Matt Maki and Nick Hiuser would score 4 points a piece. The Cranes were led by Sam Hauxwell and Cam Garner who both scored 8 points a piece.
The Pioneers move to 12-1 on the season and 7-0 in the CHSL Intersectional. The Cranes move to 9-4 on the year and 4-3 in the conference. Gabriel Richard will host Cardinal Mooney on Friday while Cranbrook will play Bishop Foley.
