Pioneers News · Hockey Advances to Semi-Finals with 4-0 Win

Two hockey quarterfinal games in Division 3, Region 24 took place on Wednesday night at Yack Arena in Wyandotte. Regional host Riverview Gabriel Richard took on Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central but not before fellow Yack Arena resident Wyandotte Roosevelt battled with Gibraltar Carlson.

The nightcap featured the regional host Pioneers from Gabriel Richard winning their sixth game in a row and their eighth in their last 10 overall with a shutout of the Falcons from SMCC.

It was a scoreless first period for both teams but Richard (17-8) was peppering away at SMCC (11-16) from the start. Falcons goaltender Nathan King faced 13 of his 35 shots on goal in that first period then saw 11 in each of the final two frames.

The Pioneers finally broke things open in the second period courtesy of Sebastian Potter. Minutes later, it was Jimmy Monks giving the home team a two-score advantage. Finally in the third, Nathan Vazquez and Brendan Paden scored just 45 seconds apart midway through the period to cap off the scoring.

Richard netminder Drew Adams stopped all 23 shots he faced. Adams was under duress the most in the second period when he turned away 12 shots.

Richard will face Carlson at 8 p.m. on Friday in a D3, Region 24 semifinal, back at Yack Arena. That contest will be preceded by a matchup between Grosse Ile (16-8-2) and Riverview (20-5-1) at 6 p.m.

The winner of each semifinal game will square off in the championship on Wednesday, March 4 at Yack Arena. The regional champ will play on Saturday, March 7 in a state quarterfinal at Dearborn Ice Skating Center.
