Richard got two goals from Asher Cousino in a hard-fought victory over Lutheran Westland (3-3) in the second district semifinal played Wednesday night on the Pioneers’ burgundy turf.
Cousino opened the scoring when he cashed in a break-away in the 34th minute.
The Warriors applied quite a bit of pressure early in the second half, but the Pioneer defense kept them from generating any good scoring chances.
In the 50th minute, Richard’s Connor Silka collected a loose ball in front of the Lutheran Westland goal, following a Pioneer free kick, and found the back of the net to put his team up 2-0.
The Warriors cut their deficit in half when Andrew Boehm scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.
Hoping to even things up, Lutheran Westland continued to press. However, the Richard defense and goaltender Kyle Paoletti protected the narrow lead.
Cousino struck again, in the 60th minute, and gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage, which held up as the final score.
Richard and Inter-City were set to meet on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. to decide the D4, District 57 title. The winner of that game will go on to play either Clarkston Everest Collegiate or Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
