The Pioneers Boys Basketball Team has had a familiar year…Winning the Section championship, the CHSL Tournament Championship and looking to capture another district championship. To do so, the Pioneers would have to top Detroit Leadership Academy. Richard would find themselves in the championship after a 65-42 win over Taylor Prep. Detroit Leadership found themselves in the finals after a their opponent (Cabrini) opted out on Tuesday night.
In the first, Gabriel Richard Catholic would be firing on all cylandars outscoring Detroit Leadership 14-6. The Pioneers would get balance from 3 players. Junior, Michael Calhoun would drop in 6 points while Junior, Cainan Harrison would score 5 points. Junior, Nick Szczechowski would drain a triple in the quarter. Jackson D’Angelo and Neal Vander both hit three pointers for the Cougars.
“We were happy the way we came out in the first quarter.” Head Coach, Kris Daiek said. “We have been getting off to good starts and feeding off of that for the past few games.” Coach Daiek said.
In the second, GR widened their lead by outscoring their opponent 21-13. The scoring came from Senior, Mike Holdsclaw who scored 12 points in the quarter while Calhoun and Harrison would score 4 points a piece and Drew Daiek would drop in a three pointer. The Pioneers would carry a 16 point lead into half time.
In the third, the Pioneers would start to pull away with a 23-7 run. Led by Holdsclaw who would drop 7 points and Junior, Nick Szczechowski would score 6 points. Senior, Joe Wisniewski scored 6 points in the quarter and Harrison would add 4 points. GR would take a commanding 58-26 lead going into the final quarter.
“We really stepped up in the third quarter.” Coach Daiek said. “I thought we shared the ball and our movement was much better in the second half.” Daiek added.
In the fourth, Richard would close out the game 61-37. The Pioneers were led by Holdsclaw who scored a game high 19 points and 8 rebounds. Calhoun would have 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Szczechowski scored 12 points and 6 assists. Canian Harrison scored 9 points and Joe Wisniewski scored 6 points.
The Pioneers would capture their third consecutive district championship. Gabriel Richard topped Ecorse in 2019 and didn’t get a chance to play in the 2020 finals and won in 2021.
“This has been a very challenging season. This team has accomplished so much in such a difficult season.” We never had the chance to compete in last year’s championship game (COVID), however, we decided (with Ecorse) that we would share the district championship and recognize our 2020 seniors.” Coach Daiek said.
Gabriel Richard will advance to the Regional Semi-Finals versus the winner of Arbor Preparatory and Greenhills. That game will be on Saturday. All regional games will be played at Erie Mason on Tuesday, March 30 at 5:30pm and 7pm.
