Game Recap

Gabriel Richard Catholic would welcome in Our Lady of the Lakes on Friday night. The Pioneers would enter the game at 4-0 while the 2016 MHSAA State runners up, Lakers would enter the contest with a 2-3 record.

“Lakes has made some deep playoff runs over the past few years, including a state championship finals two years in a row.” Coach Daiek said.

In the first, both teams struggled early. However, as the quarter went on, both teams found the mark. Senior, Tim Augustyniak scored 10 points in the quarter and Senior, Anthony Brown scored 3 points. Sophomore, Noah Robak would score 6 points.

“We looked very impatient on the offensive end.” Coach Daiek said. “It looked like we where trying to score 20 points on each possession.” Daiek added.

In the second, Lakes would try to slow the tempo down with switching zone defenses. GR would find the bottom of the net from beyond the arc. The Pioneers would hit 4 three pointers in the quarter. Yuir Alonte (Senior), Devin Gleason (Sophomore), Eric Wigginton (Junior) and Anthony Brown would each hit from beyond the arc. Richard would go into half time up 9.

“Lakes does a good job of controlling the tempo.” Daiek said. “Even though we hit some shots in the quarter, they controlled the tempo.” he added.

In the third, the Lakers defense would keep the Pioneers to one shot on every possession and now Richard’s shots stopped falling. Sophomore, Noah Robak would cut into the lead and have the Lakers down 4 heading into the final quarter. Robak would score 8 of the teams 11 points.

Senior, Anthony Brown

“Lakes is extremely well coached and his players are extremely tough. He has a young team but they play hard.” Daiek said. “We knew they where not going away.” Daiek added.

In the fourth, the game went back and fourth. Both teams would trade baskets. Sophomore, Deshon Elam would play a big roll in the game defensively with three rebounds, two steals and 4 points. GR’s Anthony Brown would play outstanding in the closing quarter. With under 4 minutes to play, the senior would get a steal, 3 rebounds and score 5 points. Three of his biggest points came with 2 minutes to play when he hit a three pointer to extend the lead to 9.

“We kinda expected that.” Coach Daiek said. “When the game is tight, he starts to take over. What makes him special is he can do that in many ways. Defensively, offensively, passing, scoring, steals, rebounds. He seems to make the big plays in the fourth.”

The defense would step up and shut down the Lakers in the fourth. The Lakers leading scorer, Noah Robak would not score in the final quarter. Lakes could only muster up 5 points in the quarter.

Game Recap

The Pioneers looked to extend their winning streak to four games on the young season. After beating Henry Ford Academy by the final score of 57-26 Richard would host cross town rival Melvindale ABT. The Gators lost to Detroit Consortium and stood with a 1-1 record. The Pioneers knew that this would be a battle from beginning to end.

Senior, Anthony Brown

“We talked about this game for a while.” Coach Daiek said. “We knew this game would be won on the glass. They (ABT) like to shoot it and go get it.” Daiek added.

In the second, the Pioneers would adjust and hold the Gators to just one basket in the quarter. However, GR could only muster up 9 points in the second. Sophomore, Garrett Balaszki would provide a spark scoring 3 points and a steal. Seniors, Anthony Brown, Tim Augustyniak and Junior Eric Wigginton would add buckets. Sophomore Deson Elam would add 2 points and 2 rebounds. Richard would carry a 21-16 lead into the half.

“We battled on the glass and we made good adjustments to the defense.” Coach Daiek said. “We wanted to be a little more aggressive on the defensive end and I think it opened up our offense.” Daiek added.

In the third, GR would continue the defensive pressure and hold the Gators to just three baskets in the quarter, all off of offensive rebounds.

“We talked about holding teams to one shot.” Daiek said. “They (Melvindale ABT) vrash the glass hard and we just couldn’t keep them off the glass…It wasn’t the first shot it was the second and third that hurt us.” Coach Daiek added.

As the third continued, Eric Wigginton would provide the offensive spark scoring 7 points in the quarter, while Sophomore, Jacob Henderson would add 4 points and 4 rebounds.

Gabriel Richard would take their fourth charge in the game in the third quarter, something the staff would emphasize before the game. Richard would take 5 charges in the game.

“We thought that if we got into position, we could take charges. We did that tonight.” Coach Daiek said.

In the fourth, GR would hold 34-25. However, the Gators would find a spark from Senior, Elijah Smith with 6 points, all off of offensive rebounds. The Pioneers would get balanced scoring from Henderson, Wigginton, Augustyniak and a big three pointer from Balaszi in the middle of the quarter. Although GR would lead by as many as 13 points the Gators kept fighting and cut the lead to five when the Sophomore, Balaszi knocked down a triple.

“We had some young kids step up tonight.” Daiek said. “Henderson, Balaszi and Elam all stepped up and gave us a boost.” Daiek added.

The sophomores contributed 21 points and 16 rebounds on the night. Jacob Henderson led scorers with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Balaszi added two three pointers and Elam 2 points and 3 rebounds.

“If we can get production from these guys, we can be tough.” Daiek said. “However, they are sophomores and they will have some up and down games. Hopefully we can get some consistency.” Daiek added.

Gabriel Richard where led by Jacob Henderson with 13 and Eric Wigginton would score 13 also. Tim Augustyniak would add 10 points and Anthony Brown would haul down 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals while scoring only 2 points.

“Ant made people better tonight.” Daiek said. “He is not always going to score…he makes people around him better.” Daiek added.

Gabriel Richard will improve to 4-0 on the season. They will play Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes on December 30th at GR. The Gators move to 1-2.

Game Recap

After the Pioneers came back in dramatic fashion against Grosse Ile on Tuesday night, Richard would welcome Dearborn Henry Ford Academy. The Navigators came into the game with a 1-2 record and losing to Arbor Prep 60-45.

In the first, both teams struggled to find their mark. GR would knock down 3 three pointers. Eric Wigginton (Jr.), Anthony Brown (Jr.) and Yuri Alonte (Sr.) would all connect from deep. Richard would create several turnovers for easy transition baskets as they would lead 17-7 after the first quarter.

“In our pre game we talked about defensive basketball and converting in transition.” Head Coach, Kris Daiek said.

In the second, the Pioneers would again use their defense to stifle the Navigators. Once again, GR would connect from the perimeter, hitting 5 three pointers in the quarter. Yuri Alonte (2), Anthony Brown (1) and Eric Wigginton (2). Wigginton would score 8 points in the quarter to extend the lead to 38-10.

After the break, GR would cool off and struggle from the freethrow line. After shooting 80% from the line against Grosse Ile on Tuesday, the Pioneers shot a dismal 1-8 in the third quarter. Sophomore, Garrett Balaszi would lead the scoring with 2 points.

“It got a little sloppy in the quarter.” Daiek said. “We are usually a pretty good freethrow point shooting team. Sometimes you can put a good stroke on it and it just doesn’t fall.” Daiek said.

In the fourth, GR would tie in the fourth 9-9. Drew Dykowski (Jr.) would connect on a three and Jacob Henderson (So.) would score 3 points in the quarter. However, the excitement came when Senior, Tim Augustyniak brought down the house with a dunk off of a steal.

The Pioneers where led by Eric Wigginton with 17 points. Senior, Anthony Brown would add 12 points. Senior, Yuri Alonte would score 9 points as they would win 56-26.

Richard moves to 3-0 and will play Friday, December 23rd against Melvidale ABT at 7:30pm.
