Gabriel Richard Catholic would welcome in Lenawee Christian on Wednesday Night. The Pioneers were coming off a win over Cranbrook on Saturday. Richard would look to make it two in a row. Lenawee Christian would look to snap a 4 game losing streak.
“We knew that they (Lenawee Christian) have been very good for a long time and to have them in our gym was great.” Coach Daiek said. “They are very well coached and can shoot the ball extremely well.”
in the first, the Pioneers were hitting on all cylinders on both offense and defense. Richard would outscore the visitors 16-6 in the first quarter. Junior, Michael Calhoun would score 9 points including a three pointer. Senior, Mike Holdsclaw would add four points and Junior, Nick Szczechowski would drop in a 3 pointer.
“We have really pushed for good starts over these last few games.” Said Head Coach, Kris Daiek. “Not from a offensive standpoint but from a defensive standpoint. More things that we are in control of.” Daiek added.
In the second, Richard continued to roll on both ends. Szczechowski would 7 points (1 – 3 Pointer) and Holdsclaw would drop in 5 points. Michael Calhoun would score 4 points and Junior, Cainan Harrison would score 3 points. GR kept the heat on outscoring the Cougars 17-12 in the quarter, opening up a 35-18 lead heading into halftime.
“We really worked on defending their shooters this week.” Coach Daiek said. “These guys (Lenawee Christian) are very good shooters and they all shoot it well so we really focused on closeouts and containing the attackers.”
In the third, Richard would keep their foot on the gas pedal outscoring their opponent 14-3. Calhoun again would pace the scoring in the quarter with 5 points while Senior, Drew Daiek would add 3 points. Harrison and Holdsclaw would add 2 points a piece. Junior, Luke Gordon added a basket.
In the fourth, GR and Lenawee Christian would both score 10 points a piece. Michael Calhoun would score 4 points while Luke Gordon dropped in a triple. Szczechwoski would add 2 points and Junior, Ashton Nowak would connect on a freethrow.
The Pioneers would end up winning by the final score of 59-31. Richard was led by Michael Calhoun with 20 points 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. Junior, Nick Szczechowski scored 12 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. Senior, Mike Holdsclaw added 11 points and 7 rebounds. Juniors, Cainan Harrison and Luke Gordon dropped in 5 points. Senior, Drew Daiek score 3 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Richard moves to 6-2 on the season and remains 3-0 in the CHSL. GR will welcome in Ann Arbor Greenhills on Saturday afternoon in a CHSL Intersectional match-up.
