Gabriel Richard Catholic welcomed Bishop Foley (Madison Heights) for a CHSL Intersectional matchup on Saturday. The Pioneers entered the contest 3-1 while the Ventures came in at 2-1. Both teams were standing on top of the conference at 1-0 which meant todays game would separate the tie.
“Foley is well coached and has tough kids.” Coach Daiek said. “They were young last year and had several key players returning.”
In the first, the Pioneers jumped out early with an 11-8 edge. Junior, Nick Szczechowski paced GR with 6 points while Junior, Michael Calhoun scored 4 points.
In the second, the Ventures would find the range. Adam Dixon would hit two 3 pointers for the Ventures as they would draw to just one point going into halftime. The Pioneers would get 2 points from Szczechowski, Calhoun, Harrison (JR) and Senior, Mike Holdsclaw.
“We came into the game focused on defending Kennedy and Zieter.” Coach Daiek said. “We knew we would give up some looks and they (Foley) can shoot the ball. However, we wanted to contain their backcourt.” Daiek added.
In the third, Foley would take the lead early and then extend the lead to 4 points. Just under 4 minutes to go Calhoun would get a dunk to give the Pioneers a slim 1 point lead. The Ventures would answer with 3:30 left in the third quarter, with a three pointer to give them a two point lead point lead. On the next possession, Junior, Cainan Harrison would drain a triple that would again give GR the lead. Yet again the Ventures would answer on the next possession with a three pointer. However, the Pioneers would answer with a Szczechowski basket.
“It was some great back and fourth basketball.” Daiek said. “It seemed that the lead changed hands several times. Kids played hard.”
In the fourth, Junior, Michael Calhoun would drain a triple to start the quarter. GR would force a turnover and again go back to Calhoun for another 2 points, extending the lead to 5 points. The Ventures would again answer the bell and cut the lead to one point. With GR leading by one point, they would look to Holdsclaw and with 3 minutes to go the Senioe would answer basket and a foul. With the Pioneers clinging to a four point lead with under 2 minutes to go it would be Cainan Harrison that would deliver a sharp blow by draining a triple. The Pioneers would lead 41-34 with under 2 minutes.
Gabriel Richard would hold on for the Victory 42-38 and move to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. Szczechowski and Calhoun would lead all scorers with 13 points while Harrison and Holdsclaw would add 8 points a piece.
“The Catholic league is one of the toughest conferences in the state.” Coach Daiek explained. “This was a big win for our team…It was a hard fought game and to come out on top was big for us.”
GR will face (CHSL) Detroit Loyola on Tuesday in a non league game.
