The Gabriel Richard Catholic Pioneers would travel to Cranbrook for a CHSL Intersectional league game. The Pioneers were coming off a Loss to Detroit Loyola 48-36. Richard trailed the Bulldogs by 2 at the half and trailed by 4 points with minutes to go. However, GR could not get closer and would collect the loss.

“Loyola is a very good team.” Said 10th year Head Coach Kris Daiek. “They were quick and we struggled with their speed but I thought we battled them and hopefully we can see them again in the state playoffs.”

Cranbrook would enter the contest against the Pioneers at 5-2 with a win against Cardinal Mooney 56-44.

In the first, Richard would come out on fire scoring the first 10 points. Senior, Mike Holdsclaw would score 8 points in the quarter and Senior, Drew Daiek would drop in 6 points. The Cranes would only muster up 5 points as Richard would carry a 17-5 lead after one.

“We were happy with the energy in the first quarter.” Coach Daiek said. “We did a good job defensively and made some shots.”

In the second, Cranbrook would answer with a 13-5 run. Drew Daiek would pace the Pioneers with 4 points. The Cranes had very good balance with 6 players scoring. At the half Richard would hold onto a slim lead 22-18.

“We didn’t have the same energy in the second as we did in the first. Give credit to them (Cranbrook) they answered the bell.” Coach Daiek added.

In the third, both teams would trade baskets. Junior, Nick Szczechowski would drain a triple and Daiek would score 4 points. Junior, Cainan Harrison dropped in a triple while Holdsclaw would score 2 points and Junior, Michael Calhoun would add 3 points. The Cranes were led by Senior, Cam Gardner (Kalamazoo Signee) with 6 points. GR would hold a slim 37-34 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, the Cranes would tie the game several time down the stretch, however, the Pioneers would never give up the lead. Holdsclaw would pace the Pioneers with 5 points while both Szczechowski and Calhoun would score 3 points a piece. Cranbrook would get 7 of his game high 20 points in the final stretch. Richard would squeak by with a 48-45 win.

“It was definatley a great battle.” Coach Daiek said. “They made some great shots and we matched them. Gardner is a heck of a player and we did everything to slow him down and he still made some great shots.”

The Pioneers would improve to 5-2 (3-0 in the CHSL) on the season while Cranbrook would fall to 5-3. Richard was led by Holdscalw with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Drew Daiek would drop in 14 points and 7 rebounds. Michael Calhoun would score 8 points and 8 rebounds and 3 Blocks while Szczechowski would add 6 points a 4 steals and 4 assists. The Cranes were led by Cam Gardner who scored 20.

Gabriel Richard will welcome in Adrian Lenawee Christian on Wednesday night while the Cranes will travel to Royal Oak Shrine.
