After clinching the CHSL League Championship on Friday night over Cardinal Mooney the Pioneers traveled to Bishop Foley on Tuesday Night. Gabriel Richard would come in with a 13-1 record while Foley entered the contest at 6-7 on the season.

The Pioneers would explode in the first quarter, outscoring the Ventures 23-8. Sophomore, Michael Calhoun would score 8 points in the quarter while Senior, Robbie Henderson dropped in 5 points. Junior, Michael Holdsclaw scored 4 points and Seniors, Hans Frederick and Jacob Kowal would drop in 3 points a piece. Senior, Joey Kennedy would pace Foley with 6 points.

“We got off to a good start offensively and defensively.” Said Head Coach, Kris Daiek. “We did a good job of sharing the ball…we had five players score in the quarter.” Coach Daiek added.

In the Second, the Ventures mounted a offensive and defensive come back, led by Trent Graves and Joey Kennedy combining for 12 points. GR would get scoring from Jacob Kowal who hit two (2) triples. Robbie Henderson, Mike Holdsclaw and Calhoun would all score buckets in the quarter. The Pioneers would a 35-22 point lead.

“We didn’t do the best job of defending…but I give credit to them (Bishop Foley), they knocked down some good shots.” Coach Daiek said.

In the third, GR would start the quarter on a 6-0 run to draw a Foley timeout. The Ventures would respond with Kennedy’s 5 points and a big 3 pointer by Joey Monroe to cut the lead to 8 points. Richard would respond with Holdsclaw who would score 8 points in the quarter. Richard would hold onto a slim 46-37 lead.

In the fourth, the Pioneers again would storm out and grab a 14 point lead, however, it was Foley’s Trent Graves who would drop in a 3 pointer to keep the game close. It was the Richard defense that would stiffen up and contain the Ventures to just three more points in the quarter (6 total points in the fourth) to secure the victory.

“We stepped up in the last few minutes in the fourth.” Coach Daiek said. “I thought we got aggressive late and that turned the game around.” Coach Daiek added.

The Pioneers were led by Mike Holdsclaw with 18 points while Robbie Henderson scored 13 points. Michale Calhoun scored 10 points and Jacob Kowal dropped in 9 points. Hans Fredrick scored 5 points and Braden Bilinski knocked down 3 points and Nick Szczechowski added 2 points.

Richard moves to 14-1 on the season while the Ventures fall to 6-8 on the season. GR will travel to Royal Oak to play the Shrine Knights for the regular season finale.
