The Pioneers Boys Basketball team welcomed in the Monarchs of Cabrini on Friday night. Gabriel Richard was coming off a win over Livonia Franklin by 3 points while Cabrini was in search fro their first one of the season. This would be the first game for both teams in the 2020 season.
In the first, Gabriel Richard would dominate the Monarchs outscoring them 18-0 in the quarter. Five Pioneers would score in the quarter. Sophomore, Nick Sczcechowski would score 5 points while Sophomore, Mike Calhoun would drop in 5 points also. Senior, Robbie Henderson would score 4 points and Juniors, Mike Holdsclaw and Drew Daiek would score 2 points a piece.
“We had some time to work on some stuff.” Said Coach Kris Daiek. “We needed a little break to work on some details on both the offensive end and defensive end.”
In the second, GR would continue to thrive on the offensive end and defensive end outscoring Cabrini 26-5 and taking a 44-5 lead into halftime.
“We played well on both ends but we really have to play at a higher level.” Coach Daiek said. “There is room for improvement on both ends of the court.”
In the third quarter, both teams would trade a few buckets. Richard and Cabrini would battle in the 8 minutes, defensively. Richard would only score 4 points, however, they would hold Cabrini to just 3 points.
In the fourth, the Pioneers would again show up defensively. Cabrini could not find the scoring column. Richard would outscore the Monarchs 9-0 in the final quarter. Drew Daiek would score 4 points in the quarter while Joe Wisniewski and Jolo Abordo would drop in 2 points a piece.
The final score would be 57-8 with GR dropping cross town rival Cabrini. Senior, Hans Fredrick would lead all scorers with 11 points. Nick Szczechowski and Mike Holdsclaw would score 8 points a piece. Senior, Robbie Henderson would score 7 points. Drew Daiek would add 6 points and Senior, Braden Bilinski and Mike Calhoun would score 5 points a piece.
“We were really happy with the total team defensive effort.” Coach Daiek said. “We had all 12 guys contribute from a defensive effort. I was happy with the defensive effort. They (Cabrini) work hard…they didn’t quit…they played all 32 minutes.” Coach Daiek reflected.
The Pioneer remain undefeated and will now look to host Flint Powers on Tuesday Night. Powers lost in the regional finals (Class B) last year and return everyone from that talented team. The game will be at 7pm.
“We will be outmatched from a talent standpoint.” Coach Daiek said. “This will be a good game for us right now. We will get better in this game…even if the scoreboard might not reflect it. It is a good challenge for our kids….lets see where we are at.”
