The Gabriel Richard Boy’s Basketball Team traveled to Cardinal Mooney last Saturday to open the CHSL Inersectional Conference play. After a disappointing loss to Shrine on Thursday night the Pioneers were looking to rebound.
“We talk about the league (CHSL) all the time.” Head Coach, Kris Daiek said. “You have to be ready to play every night because every team in our league is good. If you’re not ready…you can get beat.” Coach Daiek added.
In the first, the Pioneers came out clicking. The hour and a half drive didn’t seem to phase Richard, as they would outscore the Cardinals 17-11. Junior, Michael Calhoun scored 4 points in the quarter while Senior, Mike Holdsclaw scored 4 points. Junior, Nick Szczechowski would drop in 4 points. Junior, Cainan Harrison would score 3 points and Senior, Drew Daiek added a bucket.
“It was important for us to get out to a good start and I think we got that.” Coach Daiek said. “We went back to some basics defensively and we felt if we could generate some misses and clean rebounds we could get out in transition.” Daiek added.
In the second, the Cardinals would heat up from the perimeter hitting 4 three pointers in the quarter. Junior, Nolan Julio drained two (2) three pointers to pace the Cardinals. Gabriel Richard would get scoring again from Holdsclaw who scored 3 points in the quarter and Senior, Joe Wisniewski would drop in 4 points. Junior, Cainan Harrison would drain a triple and Szczechwoski would add 2 points.
“We knew they (Cardinal Mooney) could shoot the ball.” Coach Daiek said. “When you play team like this leads are not safe. They can shoot themselves back into games in a hurry.”
In the third, both team again would trade baskets back and forth. Mooney would count on long range shooting while the Pioneers went to the post with Calhoun and Holdsclaw. The two of them would combine for 8 points while Drew Daiek would score 4 points. Junior, Nick Szczechwoski would dish out 4 assists and 2 steals in the quarter. Richard would maintain a slight 6 point lead heading to the fourth.
“We have been pretty balance so far in this season.” Daiek said of his offense. “We have been getting scoring from every position and that was evident tonight.”
In the fourth, the Pioneers would clamp down defensively holding the Cardinals to just 3 points. However, GR would only muster up 8 points and hold on for victory 49-38. Szczechowski would lead the quarter with 4 points.
Richard moves to 2-1 on the season while Cardinal Mooney slides to 0-3. Mike Holdscalw led GR with 14 points while Cainan Harrison and Michael Calhoun would score 8 points a piece. Nick Szczechowski score 8 points and dish out 6 assists. Drew Daiek and Joe Wisniewski scored 5 a piece. Drew Daiek led the Pioneers with 8 rebounds while Holdsclaw would pull down 7 boards.
“We played well defensively, however, we have room for improvement.” Coach Daiek said. “Lot’s of details that we have to work on.”
Gabriel Richard will play Grosse Ile on Wednesday night at GR.
