The Gabriel Richard Catholic Boys Basketball Team traveled to Ann Arbor Greenhills to face the Gryphons. The Pioneers beat Greenhills 50-32 earlier in the season and would look to remain undefeated in the CHSL Intersectional Conference.
“We knew this was going to be a big game.” Said Head Coach, Kris Daiek. “They play very well in their gym and we knew it wasn’t going to be easy.” Coach Daiek said.
In the first, Richard would get out to an early lead. The Pioneers would lead 15-4 with just under 2 minutes when Sophomore, Finn Kline drained a two pointer to keep the game close. Gabriel Richard would outscore the Gryphons 17-6 in the first. Senior, Robbie Henderson would score 7 points in the quarter. Sophomore, Michael Calhoun would score 5 points and Nick Szczechowski would score 3 points a piece to pace GR.
“We knew coming in that we had to stop both Klien brothers.” Coach Daiek said. “They are both very talented scorers and keeping them contained was our goal.”
In the second, Richard would get outscored 16-0 in the quarter. The Gryphons defense held their own. The Pioneers would be called for 7 fouls to Greenhills 1 foul. This had a big effect on the Pioneers offense. Finn Klein scored 12 points and his brother (Owen) droped in 4 points. GR had several opportunities but couldn’t crack the scoreboard.
“We settled a little bit for perimeter shots and they played us very physical in the paint and on the perimeter.” Coach Daiek said. “We seemed to be expecting some calls and when we didn’t get them we didn’t handle it well.” Coach Daiek said.
With the Pioneers trailing 22-17 at the half.
In the third, Richard would respond on both ends of the floor. The defense would give up just one (1) basket in the 16 minutes of the second half. Richard would outscore Greenhills 33-11 in the second half.
In the third quarter it was Robbie Henderson and Junior, Mike Holdsclaw combining for 13 points while Senior, Jacob Kowal would drain a triple and Michael Calhoun scored 2 points. Richard’s defense was the story of the third quarter giving up just 7 points to the Pioneers 19.
“We actually took a breath at half time.” Coach Daiek said of the half-time comments. “We were pressing a little bit and trying to score 10 points each possession. We kinda got away of winning each side of the floor.” Daiek added.
In the fourth, Richard’s defense would put the clamps on the Gryphons and outscore them 14-4. Nick Szczechwoski and Calhoun would score 4 points a piece while Holdsclaw would add 3 points. Again, Robbie Henderson would hit a triple in the quarter to put the Gryphons away. Richard’s defense would only give up one (1) basket in the second half and 8 points on freethrows.
“We wanted to turn up the pressure in the second half and I thought we did a good job of that.” Coach Daiek said. “Our kids responded.”
The Pioneers move to 11-1 on the season and remain undefeated in the CHSL Intersectional Conference at 6-0. The Gryphons move to 1-5 on in the conference.
