Gabriel Richard Freshman boys lose a hard fought game to Bishop Foley 51-57. The Pioneers started off the game slowly as they worked hard to break Bishop Foley’s full court press. They did a good job of breaking the press, but it forced GR into fast shots that led to easy baskets early for Bishop Foley. Foley held a 10 lead early before GR settled down and made a small run of their own. They trailed Bishop Foley 13-19 after one.
In the second quarter, the Pioneers played solid defense. Forcing contested shots and grabbing defensive rebounds. GR tied the game at 25 before a 3 by Bishop Foley late in the quarter made the halftime lead 25-28.
The 3rd quarter belonged to Bishop Foley as they came out and forced GR into turnovers and had multiple dribble drives that they converted into layups. They outscored GR 18 to 11 in the quarter and had a commanding 10 point lead heading into the fourth.
The 4th quarter was an uphill battle for the Pioneers who were up to the challenge. Bishop Foley held on to their 10 point advantage most of the quarter, but with 2:33 left in the game, Bishop Foley called a time out. GR came out of the time out and pressed, forcing Bishop Foley into turnovers and making clutch baskets to cut the lead to 4.But the Pioneers wouldn’t get any closer as Bishop Foley put the game out of reach with seconds left on the clock.
Leading the way for GR was Stephen Maki with 16pts. Following close behind was Andrew Cabalang and Alex Meszaros with 13pts apiece. Rounding out the scoring for GR was Nick Stokes with 6pts and Patrick Guentner with 3.The Pioneers finish the season on the road vs Shrine on February 14th at 4pm.
